I was casually browsing the YSL counter at Bergdorf when I suddenly stumbled upon a Rouge Volupte lipstick that really reminds me of the phenomenally popular Rosy Coral shade - it is the YSL Rouge Volupte in No. 33 'Rose Neillia.' I was like, ok, I already have the Rosy Coral so I'm gonna pass on this one. But then I saw some swatches online and felt I had to have it lol. Well, so I went back to the YSL counter, and you know what, it was sold out! The sales assistant told me it was a limited shade. Of course, I didn't give up - I searched all over the place and finally landed on one at YSL counter in Bangkok :) I feel like this can be an alternative to those of you who cannot get your hands on YSL Rosy Coral.
The lipstick comes in the usual iconic gold packaging. This is truly the definition of luxurious! I've owned many high-end lipsticks but none has better packaging design than YSL. The tube is round but doesn't roll around.
This lipstick has a very smooth, creamy texture. It goes on very nicely and is very pigmented. You can get a lot out of a single swipe. The color completely covers natural lip color. The finish is not matte and not glossy - It has just the right amount of sheen. It also has a very yummy smell that reminds me of some fruit, maybe guava? There is a very subtle shimmer to it, which is barely visible on lips.
No. 33 'Rose Neillia' is a bright pinky coral shade. Compared to the famous YSL Rosy Coral, this has more pink and sheen to it, but it has that same bright neon effect. I think this is a shade that will look great on any skin tone :) It doesn't settle into lines (most of the time) or accentuate dry flakes. Just make sure you prep and prime with lip balm beforehand to ensure smooth application. When applying it, the product moves around slightly when I press my lips together since the formula is somewhat slippery, so it might be a good idea to use fingers/brush to blend the product out evenly. One thing though - when it fades after several hours of wear, some of the leftover product sometimes settle into my lip lines (it's not very visible so it's no big deal).
It is moderately moisturizing and lasts pretty long on me. Usually, I get 5 hours or more of wear time without eating/drinking. If I eat/drink, some will fade away but a lot still remain. I'd say it survives pretty well compared to other lipsticks.
QUICK TAKE
- Very pigmented and bright
- Not matte nor glossy; has a bit of sheen
- Glides on easily although may need fingers or brush to evenly blend out product because formula is quite slippery
- Moderately moisturizing
- Long lasting - 5 or more hours of wear without eating/drinking
- Survives meal pretty well
- When fades away, leftover product sometimes settle into lip lines but not very visible
- Doesn't accentuate dry flakes
- More pink and more sheen than the YSL Rosy Coral
If you love a bright lipstick shade, you might wanna try this. Or, if you've been on a hunt for YSL Rosy Coral to no avail, this is perhaps one of the similar shades you can take on as a substitute. It is not going to turn out exactly the same, but this is surely one high-quality dupe from the same brand. Plus, this is a gorgeous shade :) If you want one of this, you may need to hurry cause it's already been sold out at many places.
